There were no unified rules, which led to an increase in the number of points awarded for a touchdown, as well as to the resolution of a forward pass and the capture of an opponent in the area of the knees. Because of the latter, injuries to players have increased significantly.In 1905, the Chicago Tribune newspaper came up with a headline on the front page - “18 football players were killed and 159 seriously injured.” US President Theodore Roosevelt said.The rules were amended regarding the punishment for a rough game. Players were also forced to invent a special protective form - breeches with shields appeared. Athletes were recommended to wear a leather helmet during the game (since 1939, the use of a helmet has become mandatory)At the beginning of the 20th century, the rules became similar to modern ones.
